Princes Street Debenhams to be luxury hotel

An Edinburgh department store could become a luxury hotel.

Legal & General wants to invest £50m to turn the Debenhams on Princes Street into an upmarket hotel with a rooftop bar and a spa in the basement.

L&G believes the space is currently underutilised by Debenhams.

The original units, at 109 to 112 Princes Street, date from the 19th century and have previously been used as a hotel, as well as housing the Scottish Liberal Club and the Scottish Conservative Club.

The site was taken over by Debenhams in the 1970s.
