Private developers behind higher home starts

New home starts rose 8% in the three months ended November, to a total of 37,222, according to figures from the National House Building Council.

Private developers accounted for 29,812 of the new home starts, up 19%. In contrast, public sector building fell 20% to 7,410.

Separately, figures from the Homebuilders Federation showed planning permission for new homes at a post-2008 high. It noted, however, that red tape continues to obstruct development.
