The biggest private hospital groups have welcomed the idea to provide and run the new National Health Service fast-track diagnosis and surgery centres the government is planning to build.
Preliminary talks with Bupa have started.
The centres would be built, operated and financed by the private sector, providing all the financial services on contract to the NHS.
