ProLogis continues German expansion with Volkswagen deal

ProLogis is to continue its German expansion with the development of a 436,000 sq ft warehouse for car manufacturer Volkswagen in Borken, northern Germany.

The new facility, a spare parts distribution centre serving markets across Europe, is part of ProLogis Park Borken – a two-building industrial park to be built 120km east of Cologne.

The second facility, totalling 113,000 sq ft, is being developed speculatively. Both buildings are scheduled for completion in the first half of 2008.

ProLogis senior vice president and regional director for northern Europe Christian Bischoff said: “ProLogis is uniquely well-positioned to serve the distribution needs of Germany‘s automotive industry, as evidenced by today’s build-to-suit transaction with Volkswagen

“In addition to our strategic land positions and industry-leading development expertise, we have established a dedicated account team here focused exclusively on the needs of the automotive market.

“We are pleased to once again be working with Volkswagen, and look forward to delivering a state-of-the-art distribution centre that will serve their needs over the long term.”

ProLogis is one of the largest providers of distribution space in Germany, with more than 6.26m sq ft owned, managed or under development as of 30 June 2007.

Earlier this week the shed giant announced it was to develop 351,000 sq ft of distribution space in western Germany for van Eupen Logistik GmbH & Co, a German provider of third-party logistics services.

The facility, to be called ProLogis Park Unna, is under construction in the northeast area of Germany‘s Rhine region, 100km northeast of Cologne.
