The property industry has unequivocally backed Theresa May as the next British prime minister.
Almost two-thirds of the industry voted for the current home secretary to take over the Conservative party’s top position in an Estates Gazette poll of more than 500 readers.
Boris Johnson had been running a distant second, gathering 17% of votes, but has since ruled himself out of the leadership race. Embattled Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn came in with 11% of votes.
Having held the position of home secretary since 2010 May’s property credentials are untested, although clarity, certainty and stability of government are likely to be higher on the industry’s wishlist than a real estate pedigree.
Earlier this year, she turned her focus on property owners and offshore shell companies, launching a consultation into new “unexplained wealth orders” and powers allowing authorities to label companies that are a “money laundering concern”.
Anonymous property buyers to be exposed.
