Property struts its stuff

Property people can certainly make some noise when it counts, and they proved it at the annual battle of the bands event, Construction Rocks.

The band Zero Charm, made up of Balfour Beatty and Mansell staff, might consider a name change after out-playing a field of nine.

The charity event was nothing short of a grade-A gig, as 500 people poured into the Camden Centre, WC1, to shake a tail feather to the sounds of some talented musicians. The competition ranged from solo artist Maria Hanrahan from Catalyst Housing to the nine-piece band Work in Progress from Robin Partington Architects.

The judges were Gina Way, founder of Eel Pie Club, musician/singer/songwriter Peter French and Building magazine editor Sarah Richardson.

Cluttons/CBRE outfit Mr Meaner was named best newcomer, while Zero Charm was also recognised for its fundraising.

Bill Price, director of engineering consultancy WSP and co-founder of Construction Rocks, said: “This year, the competition was stiffer than ever, with more than 50 songs played to an incredibly high standard.

“It was a fantastic night.”

The winners were rewarded with a session at State of the Ark recording studio in Richmond, west London.

The event raised £12,000 for LandAid.
