Proposed sale of offices in Cardiff opens up major development opp

An estimated 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft) of 1960’s offices on Greyfriars Road in Cardiff city centre will shortly be put on the market – presenting a major opportunity for office or hotel development.

This will be the next major public sector disposal in south Wales following the Residuary Body for Wales’ sale to the University of Wales of the 6,732 sq m (72,466 sq ft) listed former Mid-Glamorgan County Hall in Cardiff.

According to Bob Croydon, partner in charge of King Sturge & Co’s Cardiff office (which is advising the RBW on property disposals in south Wales), the Greyfriars Road freeholds will come to the market in late February.

RBW brought forward the announcement of the sale of the former Mid Glamorgan HQ in Cathays Park in order to end controversy surrounding the future of the building. Some local politicians wanted the building to be retained as a possible home for the Welsh Assembly.

Ultimately the university will expand into the building, which stands next to the existing campus. But it has given permission for the offices to be used by Cardiff County Council for next year’s European Assembly.

Chesterton advised the University of Wales.
