Protest at new town in Gloucestershire

Protestors are marshalling their forces against proposals for a newtown in the Slad Valley, Gloucestershire.

The proposals have been put forward by Stroud District Council. Itwants to build 1,500 houses as well as a 10.1ha (25 acre) industrialestate.

Frank Cronin, leader of the Painswick Valley Group, said thatresidents in villages in and around the valley were astonished to be toldof the proposals at a planning meeting called by the council last month.He said: “What does an area of outstanding natural beauty mean if you cango ahead and build a huge development upon it?”
