Plans to redevelop Brands Hatch racing circuit to Grand Prix standards are to be considered at a public inquiry.
Planning minister Nick Raynsford said today that he had decided to call in the application to develop the site, which is located in the metropolitan green belt, as it might conflict with national planning policies on the green belt, countryside, nature conservation and transport.
Matters of concern include the possible impact on the adjoining Kent Downs area of outstanding natural beauty and the loss of 14ha of existing woodland, much of it ancient woodland.
The application, by Brands Hatch Leisure Group Ltd, is for redevelopment of existing facilities, including partial demolition of existing buildings and the erection of pit buildings and a paddock, a media centre and associated helipads and grandstands. Alterations to the configuration of both the Indy and Grand Prix circuits are also planned, together with landscaping, highway works and parking.
If the scheme goes ahead, it will result in a 15,000-seater, 18-tier grandstand plus three temporary grandstands capable of accommodating some 26,000 spectators. Brands Hatch estimates that some 20,000 would attend on race days.
