Putin’s son-in-law went on property binge after $380m ‘wedding gift’

Leaked emails have revealed the enormous sums spent on properties by Vladimir Putin’s former son-in-law.

Kirill Shamalov, the son of a property developer, married Putin’s youngest daughter, Yekaterina Tikhonova, in 2013, somehow acquiring a $380m stake in petrochemical company Sibu for $100 into the bargain.

The couple then went on a spending spree, buying properties near Moscow, and a seaside villa in Biarritz, France.

The leaked emails indicate that they spent vast sums on furnishing their properties. A carpet was listed as costing €54,250, while a spa set them back €321,373.

They divorced in 2017.
