Pye case referred to Grand Chamber

A European court case in which JA Pye was compensated after it lost a valuable plot in Berkshire to a farming family who had acquired squatters’ rights after working on the land for about 15 years has been referred to the Grand Chamber at the European Court of Human Rights for a final determination.

It is relatively rare that decisions by the court can be referred further to the 17-member Grand Chamber, a move which was announced yesterday.

Numerous property claims in the UK could be affected if the European court ruling in the Pye case stands.
