The Berkeley Group has been recognised by the prime minister for its work towards sustainable development.
The housebuilder turned urban regeneration specialist has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
Berkeley was among 12 businesses to be awarded the annual prize for outstanding work in sustainable development.
Other companies from the building, construction and property industry to be recognised include Benoy – the architect and masterplanner behind Brindley Place and the Bullring in Birmingham – and the Greenham Common Community Trust, which transformed Greenham Common, near Newbury, Berkshire, into a 150-acre mixed-use business park.
The Queen’s Award, now in its 43rd year, recognised a total of 139 businesses – including 85 for outstanding achievements in international trade, 42 for innovation and 12 for sustainable development.
Prime minister Gordon Brown said the companies were “standard-bearers for the very best of British business”.
