Rail needs £500m to accommodate freight demand increase

The railway network needs £500m over the next 10 years to cope with an expected 30% increase in demand for rail freight, according to a new report.

The Network Rail report proposes spending £80m to allow higher containers to run from Southampton to the west coast main line.

It does not stipulate how the work should be funded.
