Railway historians want Bishopsgate Goodsyard listing

The London Railway Heritage Society has urged the Government to list the entire Bishopsgate Goodsyard.

Bishopsgate Goodsyard is earmarked for demolition to make way for London Underground’s East London Line extension.

In March, the Goodsyard’s Braithwaite Viaduct was granted listed status, ensuring that it will not be demolished, but the rest of the site was not listed.

The society wants the Braithwaite Viaduct to be given Ancient Monument status and the remaining arches to be Grade II* listed.

Last month, English Heritage (EH) suggested that the East London Line could run above the Goodsyard, so saving it from demolition.

EH and Prince Charles have both said that demolishing the arches would constitute “vandalism”.

Railway historian Martin Foley, a Railway Heritage Society member, said: “We sincerely hope that the Secretary of State will consider upgrading the listing status of Bishopsgate Goodsyard.

“Otherwise we could be faced with a similar tragedy on the scale of the demolition of Euston Station in the 1960s.”
