The discovery of a large number of red squirrels has stalled a plan for 117 new houses in the village of Carrbridge, on Speyside.
The rare squirrels, found in the surrounding forests, have succeeded where protestors failed: conservationists lost to an appeal after the local authority originally turned the project down.
Conservationists said the houses would have ruined the village’s character and increased its population by a third.
