Rayner appointed as shadow levelling up secretary

Angela Rayner has replaced Lisa Nandy as shadow levelling up secretary.

Amongst other domestic policy areas, the role will see her leading Labour’s strategy on housing.

Rayner will also officially become shadow deputy PM, having effectively held the position since 2021.

Rayner has been agitating for a weightier role, having previously been “deputy leader, shadow first secretary of state, shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and shadow secretary of state for the future of work”.

It is believed she wanted to have the chance to go up against Michael Gove, the levelling up secretary, at the dispatch box.

Lisa Nandy became shadow levelling up secretary in 2021. She has been moved to shadow cabinet minister for international development.
