Angela Rayner could replace Lisa Nandy as shadow levelling up secretary as Labour moves to shake up its front bench.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is preparing to demote Nandy in an effort to hand Rayner a sprawling domestic portfolio that would emulate that of Labour’s last deputy prime minister, John Prescott.
The changes would come next month as Labour navigates a trio of byelections and its own National Policy Forum.
Rayner is also thought to be keen to go up against levelling up secretary Michael Gove at the dispatch box.
Labour has declined to comment on the speculation.
