Raynsford appointed Minister for London

Nick Raynsford, who became local government minister in Monday’s Cabinet reshuffle, has today also been appointed Minister for London.

The role will essentially make Raynsford, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, the Government’s liaison with Mayor Ken Livingstone and the Greater London Authority.

Raynsford said: “I now look forward to working with the new mayor and assembly to build a better quality of life for Londoners – to help boost the capital’s economy and improve its public services. This appointment fits very well with my overall responsibilities as Minister for Local Government and the Regions.”

It is expected that he will be a key player in negotiating the future of London’s transport infrastructure and delivering the Urban White Paper. His background in planning and his part in taking the Greater London Authority Act through Parliament puts him in a good position to take a more hands-on approach than Keith Hill, his predecessor as Minister for London.
