Raynsford puts brakes on Brands Hatch plans

Planning Minister Nick Raynsford has called in plans to upgrade Brands Hatch racing track.

Announcing the decision today, Raynsford said it had been prompted by the impact Brands Hatch Leisure Group’s proposal would have on the local green belt and the nearby Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The proposal would also involve the destruction of 14ha (34.6 acres) of woodland, much of which is ancient.

Raynsford’s decision means there will be a public inquiry into the scheme, with the existing grandstands being redeveloped and the Formula One circuit reconfigured.
