RBS chairman hits back at Clive Lewis over claim he misled MPs

The chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland has hit back at a Labour MP who accused the lender’s bosses of misleading parliament over the scandal at the bank’s restructuring unit.

Sir Howard Davies said that Clive Lewis, shadow Treasury minister, must “correct” a statement he made in parliament on Tuesday alleging that Sir Howard and Ross McEwan, the bank’s chief executive, had misled the Treasury select committee. Mr Lewis also claimed that RBS executives “had a stated policy of misleading” MPs.

In a letter to Mr Lewis, seen by The Times, Sir Howard said the comments were “not a fair or accurate characterisation”. He added: “I would ask that you revisit the evidence for your comment as, without correction, there is a risk that [parliament] has been misled.”
