Liverpool’s £1bn development site has been chosen to house the first northern headquarters for the Royal College of Physicians.
The 70,000 sq ft Northern Centre of Clinical Excellence will be established in early 2017 as the first phase of development in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, a 1.8m sq ft scientific and medical research hub.
It will be the RCP’s first centre outside of London and is scheduled for completion in 2020.
The Knowledge Quarter, which will be built in phases over the next 10 years, is one of five mayoral development zones in Liverpool.
Joe Anderson, mayor of Liverpool, said: “The signing up of RCP North is not just a key moment for my Knowledge Quarter Mayoral Development Zone but also for the future prosperity of Liverpool and the Northern Powerhouse, as the businesses that we are targeting to join RCP North will transform the lives of thousands upon thousands of people.”
Colin Sinclair, chief executive of the Knowledge Quarter, said: “This proves that Liverpool can compete at the highest level for major inward investment projects.”
Liverpool City Council, the University of Liverpool and the Knowledge Quarter are expected to make more announcements in the autumn.
