Peel Ports Group has struck a deal with Hydrodec Group for the UK’s first purpose-built oil re-refinery at Port Wirral in Eastham, Merseyside.
Hydrodec will take a long lease and is soon to submit plans for a nine-acre site at the Queen Elizabeth II Docks, at the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal.
It will be the first phase of a £40m development and comes after food and logistics provider Culina became the anchor tenant at Peel Ports’ £125m Port Salford.
Peel Ports group land and property director Andrew Martin said: “The Port of Liverpool currently handles 40% of all the UK’s transatlantic trade. By creating a network of port hubs along the Manchester Ship Canal, such as Port Wirral and Port Salford, Peel Ports is developing the ideal infrastructure for businesses to use these global links.
“The fact that Hydrodec chose the North West as the site for the UK’s first purpose-built re-refinery is a testament to just how attractive the region has become for businesses which require excellent multi-modal transport connections.”
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2016 and will take approximately 18 months to complete.
