Record year for BTR after new entrants flood sector

A record amount of cash has been poured into the UK’s build-to-rent property market over the past year.

Investors ploughed £4.1bn into the fast-growing sector, with more than half of the total spent in a bumper fourth quarter, according to CBRE. The total was about £500m higher than 2020’s previous record.

Close to £2bn of deals are already in the pipeline for this year and a further £2.5bn is being marketed.

Savills said the year had been a landmark for new entrants, with almost a third of deals being conducted by outfits new to the sector.
