Redevelopment plans to be submitted for Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre

Plans are to be submitted this week for the redevelopment of Liverpool’s famous Everyman Theatre on Hope Street in the city centre.

The Liverpool Merseyside Theatres Trust, which runs the theatre, describes the new building as “a vibrant creative hub fit for this uniquely cultural city in the 21st century”.

Designed by theatre architect Haworth Tompkins, the BREEAM ‘excellent’ scheme will include youth and community space, rehearsal space, workshops and offices, as well as a pavement café and theatre bar.

The building will be constructed of red brick and with a new frontage comprising 105 life-sized, abstracted portraits of Liverpool people.

Work is scheduled to begin on site in the spring of 2011 for opening in 2013.

Steve Tompkins, director of Haworth Tompkins, said: “The 1970s version of the Everyman is part of Liverpool’s heartbeat. In developing our proposals for the new Everyman with the LMTT team, we have tried to honour its unique spirit while equipping it for a new generation of brilliant theatre.”
