Birmingham City Council is searching for up to 2,787 sq m (30,000 sq ft) of offices to house its Registry Office following the effective approval of Hampton Trust’s plans to redevelop its existing premises.
Currently based in the city centre at 300 Broad Street, the Birmingham Registry Office is in the middle of Hampton Trust’s proposed plans for Arena Central – a £300m mixed-use scheme featuring one of the largest towers in the country.
Tony Liddiard, head of property management and disposals at Birmingham City Council, confirmed it was looking to take a long leasehold or freehold interest in a building to replace its current premises, following the planning decision.
“We are searching for alternative premises. We are looking to provide a building that will deliver this function into the next century,” he told EGi.
However, Liddiard stressed he was having problems meeting the requirement in Birmingham city centre and was widening the search area. The office accommodation would need to feature some 929 sq m (10,000 sq ft) of function rooms and marriage facilities. It will also need up to 30 car parking spaces.
