MJ Gleeson and Redrow have become the latest housing developers to sign the government’s building safety pledge, set out in January by former housing secretary Michael Gove.
They join listed housebuilders Crest Nicholson, Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and Berkeley Group, which have agreed to repair buildings with potentially combustible materials.
James Thomson, chief executive of MJ Gleeson said: “Leaseholders should not have to pay for any costs associated with life-critical fire-safety issues and I support the Government’s efforts to engage the wider industry in remediating buildings made unsafe by life-critical fire-safety issues. The housebuilding sector has responded positively to this initiative and is playing a proactive role and at significant cost. We will continue to work constructively with DLUHC and the wider sector to ensure that this issue is resolved expeditiously.”
Redrow pointed out that this pledge was in addition to the Residential Property Developer Tax of 4% of pre-tax profit which came into effect on 1 April 2022.
Both said that they were not aware of any fire safety concerns in their developments, and added that high rise development had never been core tho their businesses.
