Redrow Homes has won detailed consent to transform a 9,940 sq m (107,000 sq ft) city centre office block in Bristol into a £10m residential scheme.
The housebuilder bought Avon House North, the eight-storey former council offices, from Princeton Investments for £3.5m earlier this year. In its first-ever city centre residential project, it is developing 104 luxury apartments.
John Vowles, Redrow’s regional land director said: “This is a prominent building which fitted our criteria perfectly. We’re aiming it at young professionals and there’s a possibility of acquiring apartments on an investment basis also.”
Bristol council were keen to see the building developed after it had lain vacant for over three years.
Prices for apartments are believed to range from £60,000 for a studio flat to £250,000 for a penthouse. Vowles confirmed Redrow tried to get leisure developers on board to provide facilities for the scheme, he said: “We weren’t successful in attracting leisure developers, I don’t think the building suited them.”
Work will commence on site in early 2000, with the first occupation in early 2001.
