Redrow to help rejuvenation of Manchester

Redrow Homes (Lancashire) is to develop housing worth more than £15m on the site of a former margarine works in Greater Manchester. Planning permission has been granted for 221 homes on the 9.7ha (24 acre) site of Liverpool Road, Irlam.

Occupied by Co-operative Wholesale Society, the edible oils factory was built in 1916 but closed a few years ago. It was bought by Guardian Homes, who then sold it on to Redrow for an undisclosed sum.

The development will have 86 two-bedroom terraces and semi-detached houses, 79 three-bedroom semi-detached and detached houses and 56 four-bedroom properties. The plans also include public open space with a football pitch and children’s play areas. Mature trees growing near the edge of the site will be kept.

Work has started and final reclamation work is also under way. Prices start at £46,500 for a two-bedroom terrace.

Redrow managing director Tony Stevens described the site as a major addition to its landbank. An industrial estate has been built on the area’s old steelworks, and Stevens believes that “a good selection of new housing in the area will support that rejuvenation”.
