A series of measures to end murky practices in the UK’s housing market include a crackdown on “rogue” estate agents.
Sajid Javid, housing secretary, outlined several initiatives on Sunday aimed at professionalising the sector, including requiring estate agents to hold a qualification and be transparent about the fees they get for referring clients to solicitors and mortgage brokers.
Paula Higgins, chief executive of the Homeowners Alliance, which supports homeowners and prospective buyers, said the reforms “will go a long way to bring more certainty for homeowners and help stop sales falling through”.
The measures announced by the housing secretary, Sajid Javid, will also discourage agents from taking part in gazumping, whereby higher offers are accepted after a deal has already been agreed, according to the Guardian.
