Regulator criticises NHBC over lack of transparency

The Competition and Markets Authority has criticised the National House Building Council over a lack of transparency relating to payments made to builders.

The council, which provides warranties for new-build properties, refunds premiums to housebuilders who have a good claims history.

The refunds support the aim of the NHBC to raise housebuilding standards, its business development director, Neil Jefferson, said. Last year, the council made refunds totalling £4.5m and paid out £90m to homeowners.
