Around 44% of institutional property holdings are in the retail sector, according to Weatherall Green & Smith in a new report, The Future of the High Street. It analyses the rapid evolution of retailing, with particular emphasis on prospects for the high street in the face of threats from other retailing areas. Weatherall concludes these threats have been overstated, but adds that although retail warehouses remain at the top of many institutional shopping lists, this sector also faces possible problems as rents rise, pushed up by competition from leisure operators.
