A public consultation on plans to turn a former factory in Birmingham’s Westside district into homes has been launched.
GNM Developments is seeking to transform 52 Gas Street into 160 flats with the adjoining Gas Street Canal Basin Toll House to be converted into co-working space for residents. The scheme has been designed by Broadway Malyan.
Gerald Manton, managing director at GNM, said the development would become the UK’s first multi-storey energy-positive building, with a key feature of the scheme being a solar façade, projected to generate more than 427,000 kilowatt hours of energy a year.
This would not only serve the building’s energy needs, he said, but would also contribute surplus electricity back to the grid, helping to illuminate Gas Street, which was the first street in the city to be lit by gaslight.
Public consultation on the proposals runs until 7 May, with a full planning application due to be submitted by 17 May.
