Resi makeover of Bristol Zoo Gardens to be approved

Plans to redevelop Bristol Zoo Gardens into a 192-home residential scheme are set to be approved by Bristol City Council.

Proposed plans for the 12-acre zoo include the development of 37 houses and 159 flats, 20% of which will be affordable. There will be 535 cycle storage racks and 120 car parking spaces.

The application also proposes improvements to the lake, a free nature-inspired play area and space for community events in the existing terrace theatre.

Features such as the entrance building, grand terrace, west and east lawns, mature trees, central lake, bear pit, monkey temple and all the other distinctive heritage features will remain.

Bristol Zoological Society said the pavilion, museum, parrot house, giraffe house, and the 1930s clock tower building are to be restored and transformed into dwellings.

The application has received several objections from the community. Earlier this year, protesters gathered to rail against plans to move Bristol Zoo from its current city centre site in Clifton Downs.

Last year the site was put up for sale for £40m with the zoo moving to north of the city at the site of its Wild Place Project, which will open off the M5 in 2024.

Savills advised Bristol Zoological Society on the application.
