Resi scheme planned for Bristol Zoo Gardens

The Bristol Zoological Society has put in a planning application to redevelop the Bristol Zoo Gardens as it looks to sell the site to finance a new zoo.

The society wants permission for 200 homes across the 12-acre zoo. With planning in place it would then sell the site to fund its new zoo at Wild Place Project, just off the M5.

The planning application includes turning the Clifton site’s zoo structures into 200 homes, of which 20% would be affordable.

The application also proposes improvements to the lake, the creation of a new, free nature-inspired play area and space for community events in the existing Terrace Theatre building.

Justin Morris, chief executive of Bristol Zoological Society, said the society is “confident in our plans” and “proud of the ambition and quality of the design proposals we have submitted”.

The site’s historic gardens are preserved in the application and are made accessible to the public free of charge.

Zoo features such as the Monkey Temple and former Bear Pit will also be protected.

Savills advised the society on the application.
