The first plot of land at Associated British Port’s 76.89ha (190 acre) Waterfront scheme in Barry, South Wales, is set to be sold next month bringing commercial development on the site a step closer.
There is outline planning permission for 11,148 sq m (120,000 sq ft) of retail on the site. According to Mike Rees of the scheme’s agent Chesterton, ABP and the Welsh Development Agency, its partner in Barry, are considering applying for further retail planning permission.
Six residential developers, including Berkeley Homes and Fairview, are set to bid for the first 2.8ha (7 acre) plot. Local agents believe that the deal will kick start commercial building on the site
ABP has spent up to £20m on infrastructure and opening up the Waterfront site for development in an area that is an unemployment blackspot. Some 8.49 ha (21 acres) has been set aside for commercial development.
Chesterton and Cooke & Arkwright are joint agents on the Waterfront.
