Retail sales hit a six-month high in August, aided by the warmer weather and the weaker currency.
The Confederation of British Industry’s distributive trades survey showed 35% of retailers reported a rise in sales volumes against 26% reporting a decline. The balance of +9 was far better than had been expected and represented a sharp turnaround from a reading of -14 in the previous month.
Sales in September are likely to moderate, however, given a reading of +3 in the expected sales index for next month.
