Retail sales down 0.2% in August

Retail sales fell less than expected in August, down 0.2% on the month, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.

The figure for July was revised up to show a rise of 1.9%, from the 1.4% originally published.

The underlying pattern in the retail sector remains one of solid growth, ONS’ head of retail, Mel Richard, said, adding the figures do not suggest any major fall in post-referendum consumer confidence.
