Retail sales were 1.3% higher on the year in August on a like-for-like basis, figures from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG showed.
August provided a welcome pick-up in retail sales, with non-food returning to growth, BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said. She noted, however, that non-food sales were only just back to the levels of two years ago, and that the increase in food sales was mainly due to higher prices.
Three-month figures showed food sales rose by 1.8%, while non-food sales were up 0.6%.
