Retail specialists team up for Glasgow Xscape leisure scheme

Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) and Capital & Regional (C&R) are to form a 50:50 partnership to fund and develop the UK’s second Xscape centre at Braehead retail centre outside Glasgow.

In November of last year CSC submitted a planning application for a major expansion of the Braehead centre on 66.77ha (165 acres) surrounding the site. CSC’s proposals comprise a 41,000 sq m (441,000 sq ft) leisure centre, another 39,390 sq m (424,000 sq ft) of offices, as well as residential and retail space.

The existing 74,320 sq m (800,000 sq ft) Braehead shopping centre and 24,154 sq m (260,000 sq ft) retail park form the first phase of a long-term regeneration programme for the banks of the River Clyde. The complex also includes two ice rinks and a 4,000 seat arena. A 24,526 sq m (264,000 sq ft) Ikea store on King’s Inch Drive next to the centre will open in September.

The first 51,095 sq m (550,000 sq ft) Xscape in Milton Keynes includes the UKs largest indoor “real” snow ski slope, an Esporta health and fitness club, a mulitplex cinema, two climbing walls, a 24 lane ten-pin bowling alley, as well as bars, restaurants and shops.
