Retail sales have fallen at their joint fastest rate on record this month.
According to the CBI a net balance of -55% of retailers reported rising sales, down from -3% in March. The decline matches that of December 2008.
Every sector suffered in April, including grocery stores. A net balance of -27% of food retailers reported rising demand, a sharp fall from a positive 94% in March.
