Retailers left underwhelmed by ‘Super Saturday’

The last Saturday before Christmas has seen a slight rise in shoppers, but overall footfall has fallen year-on-year.

The so-called ‘Super Saturday’ attracted 1% more shoppers to the high street in 2018 compared with 2017. High street footfall was also up 6.9% on the previous Saturday, figures from retail specialist Springboard show.

However, overall footfall fell by 0.7% on last year.

In December so far this year, the drop in footfall has been a third greater than in December 2017.

Unlike last year, when  footfall peaked on the Friday before Christmas, this year it peaked on Saturday, increasing by 4.2% from Friday.

The late surge is likely to be due to shoppers leaving their shopping until as late as possible in order to take advantage of retailers’ additional discounts.
