Last week’s Black Friday sales were unable to revive monthly customer numbers to pre-pandemic levels.
The British Retail Consortium said that footfall between 31 October and 27 November was 15.7% down on the same period two years ago, and was 2% lower than in October.
While the sales period was fruitful for businesses, with the volume of transactions up 2.4% compared with 2019 and 23% more than last year, according to Barclaycard, much of that business was conducted online.
Helen Dickinson, the BRC’s chief executive, blamed poor weather.
