Retailers responsible for retail experience

MIPIM UK: Retailers need to take more responsibility over the quality of the shopping experience to secure the future of the high street.

The panel discussed this and other topics at the MIPIM UK debate “Great British high streets – RIP or revitalization?” this morning.

Changing consumer habits have seen a rise in online sales and click-and-collect schemes, the panel said.

“Consumers want to be engaged and continually excited. In this respect, local authorities have neglected their duties,” said Chris Pyne, director of shopping centres, TIAA Henderson.

The fragmentation of ownership is another barrier. “[Landlords] all have different ideas and need a cohesive strategy and active management programme,” said Susan Freeman, partner Mishcon de Reya.

To achieve this, local authorities need more funding and BIDS. “The sector must be supported by the government and retailers must also offer the best to survive,” said Steven Cohen, chief executive, Blue Inc.
