Retail’s extended interest

Extensions to existing shopping centres are set to overtake plans for new centres within three years, with 60% of all proposed space an add-on to existing centres by 2019.

Additions to existing shopping centres will account for nearly 2m sq ft in the next three years, with a further 1m sq ft in the pipeline the year after. Extensions to Brent Cross and Westfield London account for 1.3m sq ft of this figure.

Overall, more than 30m sq ft is in the development pipeline to 2020, with developers targeting the North West, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

In-town continues to trump out-of-town, with 65% of schemes currently under construction located in town centres across the UK.
