Return to the office? Yes, but only for two days a week

Employers will be forced to cut back on space as workers are spending less than two days in the office.

According to consultancy AWA, while the average percentage of days in the office has risen from 29% to 35%, it may have reached a plateau. This will force employers to cut back on office space, it concludes.

The study, which assessed nearly 120 workplaces in 22 countries, found workers are averaging 1.75 days a week in offices, despite pleas from employers to come in more often.

A quarter of workplaces have instructed their staff to spend more than three days a week on site, but have managed an average attendance of 2.1 days. Those companies insisting on four days a week are achieving an average attendance of two days.

The research found 37% were looking to sell, sublet or consolidate their offices.

The US remained behind on office working globally as workers clocked attendance levels of 29%, compared with 32% in the UK and 55% across the European Union.
