The return of workers to their offices has been good news for the high street, new figures show. But footfall remains below pre-pandemic levels.
The number of people going to shops was up 10.4% last month, compared with February last year, according to the latest BRC-Sensormatic IQmonitor.
But that is still 8.8% lower than in 2019.
The recovery, driven by the return of commuters to offices, was sharpest on traditional high streets and in shopping centres, up by 17.8% and 11.7% respectively.
This was balanced by a decline in the use of out-of-town retail parks, which experienced a 3.3% fall in numbers last month.
