Revised masterplan drawn up for Manchester’s West Gorton

Urban regeneration company New East Manchester, with Manchester-based planning practice DPP Shape, has created a revised masterplan for the West Gorton area of the city.

The plan, which will be phased over 10 years, involves the development of 900 new homes, the refurbishment of existing homes and the creation of a new public park and community facilities.

NEM is working with Manchester city council, the Homes and Communities Agency and housing association Guinness Northern Counties to take forward its regeneration plans.

The proposed first phase of the development includes 76 local authority flats, plus some new semi-detached homes and bungalows on Gortonvilla Walk.

Shelagh McNerney, managing director of DPP Shape, said: “The approval of New East Manchester, Manchester city council and the HCA to proposals within the revised plan for West Gorton demonstrates that, even in tough economic conditions and uncertainty, there is a need for flair, strong ideas and sensible solutions to assist neighbourhoods improve and regenerate.”
