Richardson Cordwell is set to forge ahead of Morrison Developments in the race to secure a cinema operator in Birmingham. The local developer has signed up Warner Village for its £25m leisure scheme in Broad Street.
The 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) scheme – known as V Ways Leisure – secured planning consent earlier this week for a 9-screen cinema, a bowling alley, a nightclub and themed restaurants.
Morrison Developments, with Property Solutions, is also trying to open the first multiplex in the city centre at a much bigger site, the 2.08 ha (5.2 acre) Broadway Plaza. The developer has only recently submitted a planning application for a 33,000 sq m (360,000 sq ft) development with a 24-screen multiplex, fitness and leisure facillities and licensed leisure and restaurant outlets on the former Children’s Hospital site.
US cinema operator AMC is rumoured to be close to signing up although a Morrison’s spokesman declined to confirm any names.
Warner is already committed to running a major multiplex operation of some 30 screens at Tarmac Richardsons Starsite development in Birmingham Heartlands.
DTZ Debenham Thorpe is advising Richardson Cordwell. DTZ and Oliver Liggins are letting agents on Morrison’s proposed scheme in Birmingham.
