Rising house prices were the main factor behind an almost £500bn increase in the country’s total wealth last year, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.
The increase equates to a rise of £135,000 per person or £327,000 per household.
The value of housing stock rose by £355bn, or 7%, on the year to £5.5trn, while the value of other buildings reached £984bn.
