Riverside Studios heads for administration as redevelopment hikes costs

London’s Riverside Studios is entering administration, citing “eye-watering” energy bills and the debt incurred by its recent redevelopment.

The venue closed in 2014 for redevelopment and opened again in November 2019, shortly before the Covid-19 outbreak, which led to the temporary closures of venues.

Since then energy costs at its new complex – which includes three theatres, TV studios, a cinema, bars and a restaurant – have risen by 300%.

The arts centre, situated on the Thames in west London, is marking its 45th anniversary of operating in Hammersmith but the board of the Riverside Trust charity said that it has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.

The former Victorian engineering works were turned into an arts centre in the mid-1970s, having previously been a film studio.
